In a recent report, reporters Danny Rust and Ben Jacobs revealed that Aston Villa are leading the way in signing Chelsea defender Ian Maatson this summer. Villa are reportedly close to beating Borussia Dortmund in the race for the Dutch left-back this offseason.

Mattson impressed on loan at Signal Iduna Park last season

Mattsson has performed well during his recent loan spell at Dortmund and has produced a series of eye-catching performances on the left wing. The 22-year-old played 23 games for the German team last season, scoring 3 goals and providing several assists.

The Dutch talent shines at times on the left wing, averaging 1.9 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 1.1 clearances, 0.7 shots and 0.8 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. In Germany’s top flight, he has a pass success rate of 89.4% (data from whoscored) and his passing is even accurate.

His current contract with his parent club Chelsea will expire in the summer of 2026.

What will Mattson bring to Aston Villa?

Mattson is a tough defender who is able to time challenges well and win the ball back for his team inside the half. He has no hesitation in passing the ball with his feet when required and is capable of powerful shots from distance.

The Dutch wide player can even create the odd chance for his team-mates and is also a decent dribbler with the ball on the left wing. He primarily plays as a left-back but can also play on the left if called upon.

Mattson will bring further quality to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s defense. He’s good enough to compete with Lucas Digne for a regular spot in the first team at Villa Park next season. Therefore, Villa should focus on recruiting him ahead of the new season.

At 22 years old, Mattson has the potential to become a world-class player at his position. Therefore, the West Midlands club would be wise to sign him before the end of this summer transfer window.
