Chelsea sign Barcelona forward Marc Giu after paying release clause

Chelsea have signed 18-year-old Barcelona striker Marc Guillou after activating his €6 million release clause. Both clubs confirmed the much-rumored deal on Monday night.

Barcelona had tried to give Gio a new contract but the young striker expressed doubts about his path into the first team, with Robert Lewandowski and Vitor Roque ahead of him in the pecking order. . He is also believed to be disappointed with Barcelona’s offer.

Chelsea have signed him on a five-year contract, with Marca reporting that he will earn a salary of €1 million per year, which is believed to be somewhat more than Barcelona are willing to pay. He also stressed in his official statement that part of the reason he joined Chelsea was this exciting project.

Giu made his debut for Barcelona’s senior team this season, scoring the winning goal against Athletic Bilbao. He scored again in the Champions League against Royal Antwerp, one of six further cameos. However, he has spent the majority of this season with Atletico Barcelona in the third tier, with Sevilla also mentioned as a potential destination for Guillot on loan next season.
