West Ham United set to sign experienced goalkeeper

In a recent tweet, journalist Dharmesh Seth claimed that West Ham United will sign Wes Foderingham on a free transfer this summer. It has been revealed that the Hammers have agreed a two-year deal with the English goalkeeper.

Fordringham’s tough campaign at Bramall Lane

Foderingham has endured a difficult season at Sheffield United recently, struggling to provide stability at the back in the Premier League. The English talent played 31 games for Sheffield United last season, conceding 79 goals and keeping two clean sheets in as many games.

The 33-year-old deserves credit for averaging 1.0 clearances and 7.6 long balls per game in the Premier League. However, in England’s top flight he has a pass completion rate of 52.6% (data from whoscored) and he struggles when distributing possession from the back.

Foderingham’s contract with Sheffield United expires at the end of this month and he will become a free agent. Therefore, West Ham would be better off recruiting him on a free transfer this summer.

Would Foderingham be a good signing for Arsenal?

Foderingham is an excellent ball-handler who can use his quick reactions to make some solid saves at the back. When he’s at risk of being caught inside half-space, he’ll often put his feet through the ball. However, if the England goalkeeper is to succeed at West Ham, he must find a way to improve his ball distribution.

Foderingham has a wealth of experience at the highest level and can still be a quality squad player in the Premier League. Therefore, he would be a good signing for the Hammers in the short term.

The London-born talent has the quality to become a quality rotation player in Julen Lopetegui’s side next season. He will be a reliable backup option to Alphonse Areola at the London Stadium in the coming years.

All things considered, it would be nice for West Ham to sign Foderingham on a free transfer this offseason. However, at this stage of his career he is nowhere near good enough to challenge for a regular spot in the east London club’s first team.
